What is Markdown?

Markdown is a lightweight markup language that uses plain characters such as # for headings, ** for bold and - for lists, so text stays readable even before it is rendered. It is the standard format for README files, GitHub issues, documentation sites, note apps and many blogs. This editor follows GitHub-flavored Markdown, which adds tables, task lists, strikethrough and fenced code blocks, and shows the rendered HTML as you type.

Features

  • • GitHub-flavored Markdown: tables, task lists, strikethrough and code blocks
  • • Edit, split and preview modes
  • • Toolbar for bold, links, code, lists, quotes and tables
  • • Word, character and line count with reading time
  • • Copy HTML or download .md and a styled standalone .html file

Private by design

Your text is rendered in the browser and never uploaded. The preview strips scripts, event handlers and javascript: links, so pasted HTML cannot run code on the page.

Sanitized preview, 100% client-side.

How to use the Markdown Preview

  1. 1

Write or paste Markdown in the editor. The preview on the right updates as you type, with headings, lists, tables, code blocks and task lists.

  2. 2

Use the toolbar to insert bold, italic, headings, links, code, lists, quotes, tables or a horizontal rule. Select text first to wrap it.

  3. 3

Switch between Edit, Split and Preview modes. Turn on "Line breaks as <br>" if single line breaks should show up, as in GitHub comments.

  4. 4

Copy the generated HTML, or download the text as .md or as a standalone .html file with basic styling that opens in any browser.

Practical examples

Writing a README

Draft the README for a GitHub or GitLab repository and check that tables, code blocks and checklists render correctly before you commit.

Documentation and notes

Write technical notes, meeting minutes or runbooks in Markdown, which stays readable as plain text and works in tools like Notion, Obsidian and Confluence.

Issue and pull request descriptions

Prepare a long bug report with steps, code snippets and a task list, preview it, then paste it into the issue tracker.

Turning Markdown into HTML

Convert a Markdown article to clean HTML for a CMS, an email newsletter or a static page without installing a static site generator.

Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown flavor is supported?+

GitHub-flavored Markdown (GFM): standard CommonMark plus tables, task lists, strikethrough with ~~text~~, fenced code blocks and automatic links.

Can I use HTML inside Markdown?+

Yes, Markdown allows raw HTML. For safety the preview removes scripts, iframes, event handlers such as onclick and javascript: links, so pasted content cannot run code on this page.

Why does a single line break not create a new line?+

In standard Markdown a single line break is treated as a space; a blank line starts a new paragraph. Turn on "Line breaks as <br>" or end the line with two spaces to force a break.

Is my text saved?+

No. The editor works in your browser and nothing is uploaded. Download the .md file if you want to keep your work.
